Dear Eckhart,
You often use phrases such as “true alignment with life” and “inner alignment with what is”. How can we ever be out of alignment with what is? Surely what is is WHAT IS and must include confusion, resistance and non surrender to the present moment.
Dear Anonymous,
What you say is the truth. As long as that truth is not recognized, however, there is suffering (which of course is part of what is.) As soon as it is recognized, a new dimension arises: awareness, Presence. This is the awakening, the shift, the transcendence of suffering. So, when I say alignment with life I mean conscious alignment. Non-surrender to the present moment is ultimately only non-recognition that you are already one with what is. This is the illusion of separation (which, of course, also has its rightful place within the totality). So we are all on a journey from unconscious to conscious alignment with life. (Please see also A New Earth, page 163/64 for another perspective on this).

Do you feel that your will and the will of God is the same?
October 8th, 2008 by
Dear Eckhart,
Do people really have the ability to choose? As an enlightened being, do you feel that your will and the will of God is the same? I worry that I will become like the Borg on Star Trek, just part of one collective. Thanks for your time, Eckhart. “laughter”
Dear Gregory,
You are already a Borg. You have already been assimilated. As long as you are unconscious (spiritually speaking), you ARE part of the collective, and the belief that your thoughts are “your” thoughts is an illusion, an illusory personal identity. Both the content and structure of your mind (i.e. what you think and how you think) are forms of conditioning. You don’t think: thinking happens to you. You are being thought by the collective mind. So it’s not a question of not being assimilated into the collective, but stepping out of the collective dream of unconscious thinking, that is to say stop being a Borg.

Is the business created with your books, CDs & DVDs another form of ego?
October 8th, 2008 by
Dear Eckhart,
My wife and I have interesting discussions about your teachings. Yesterday, she pointed out something interesting. She asked if the business created with your books, CDs and DVDs is another form of ego. What do you think about this?
Dear Arnldo Butler,
Certain organizational structures are necessary to get the teaching out into the world. When I started teaching there was virtually no structure (except for a park bench), but of course very few people were being reached. I was quite happy with that, but then the growth of the teaching over the years required more external structures. Those organizational structures are there to respond to the growing demand for the teaching, not to create the demand. If the growth of the teaching had come about as the result of creating a bigger organizational structure, that might have involved egotism, but it was the other way around.
It is true that any structure or organization could become self-serving (ego-based), which is to say the driving force behind it would be a desire for expansion, for more followers, more profit, fighting against “competing” organizations (“enemies”) etc. This, as you know, has happened even to churches and religions. In such cases, the structure serves no purpose beyond itself.
Ego arises the moment you identify with some form. The “form” could be a business, a possession, an organization, or any mental image of yourself that gives you a sense of identity, of who you are. Without identification, there is no ego.

Why we have an ego and why it seems to be our enemy?
October 8th, 2008 by
Dear Eckhart,
I just started reading one of your books for the first time “A New Earth”.
I am still having a hard time understanding why we have an ego and why it seems to be our enemy.
Can you explain it more simply for me so I understand the ego’s purpose?
Dear T Hayzel,
The ego is a stage in the evolution of human consciousness. It is not your enemy. To perceive somebody or something as an enemy is in fact one of the main misperceptions or delusions of the egoic unconsciousness. So, you cannot fight against the ego and win that fight. If you think you have won the fight against the ego, it is the ego in you that thinks so and it has enlarged itself. So the ego is not an enemy, but a dysfunction. Looked at from one point of view, it is an entity that the mind created. From another perspective, however, it is simply a delusion, resulting in a distorted way of perceiving reality and consequently in dysfunctional behavior.
This second perspective is probably a more helpful one.
A delusion dissolves when you recognize it as delusion, and so does the ego. The ego is the by-product, as it were, of the rapid development of our faculty of thought over the past six thousand years. We lost ourselves in thought, that is to say became identified with it to such an extent that we now derive our sense of who we are from thinking. Thought is a particular way for universal intelligence to express itself. It is no more than a tiny aspect of that vast intelligence. Thought, through naming things, analyzes, dissects, and separates reality into bits and pieces. Thinking can be a helpful practical tool, but when you identify with thinking the delusion of separation arises. Your reality becomes fragmented. You lose your original sense of connectedness with Being (“paradise”). You become unhappy, needy, discontented, full of ever unfulfilled desire, and you are always unconsciously attempting to regain your lost sense of being, of who you are.
Life is one and I am one with all life.
When you know this truth, the ego dissolves. To know means to realize. How, then, do you realize this truth?
At this moment – the only moment there is – there are some thoughts moving across your mind (the words you are reading and whatever your mind is adding to them). However, you can also KNOW that these thoughts are moving across your mind. That knowing is the dimension of awareness. It has nothing to do with thinking. While thinking happens, you can know yourself as the awareness behind the thinking, the alert stillness in the background – ungraspable, indefinable, elusive.
When you disidentify from thinking, you may also discover a growing ability within you to perceive things and people without immediately naming them. In this way, the ego, which is the unconscious habit of identifying with every thought that arises, begins to dissolve.

Can we consciously let go of the mind/ego without the push of a tragedy?
October 8th, 2008 by
Dear Eckhart,
There seems to be a focus on going through a tragedy/upheaval to become “enlightened”. Jesus’ crucifixion is used to strengthen this belief, but he was awakened before the cross. Can we consciously let go of the mind/ego without the push of a tragedy?
Dear Greg:
Every true spiritual teaching is about entering the state of non-resistance voluntarily, that is to say consciously. But before that possibility opens up for you, you need to have reached an important point: you need to be absolutely fed up with suffering, fed up with drama, conflict, unhappiness, anxiety…
Only you yourself can truly answer your question. However, please allow me to rephrase it, so that the question becomes more helpful. The question is: Am I ready to let go of my interpretations (or stories) and allow this moment to be as it is? You may need to ask yourself this question many times. If the answer is yes, then at that moment you are free of suffering and are not crucifying yourself (and others) anymore. If the answer is no, that means you need more tragedy, and life – which is ultimately yourself – will give you what you need.

: BRILLIANT
: It seems like church goers and ones who lug the bible around are strange but nit in a good way. I guess you gotta love the contrast that serves us all so well;) gees give up that twisted story all ready. We get what is ment by it but most of it is distorted and in no way are the words if god or Jesus who which by the way was only a very enlightened you. If anyone of you dissappeared for months to meditate like he did then you would know your power too and heal people etc. He was a great man yes. But not to be held above yourself like he's better. It's a story, it's easy to read between the lines and see the little that's true or the points being made. And after doing that let it go. Why are you still toting that darn book around... Weird. Why not spend more time on yourself instead of that twisted book. He saw a ball of light... Ring any bells as you would say?! Maybe reading other books would help see more of the real truths. And the only things that matter which are the laws of this universe. Which Jesus obviously was slacking on toward the end there which is why he was crusified:( get in the vortex, follow your excitement, meditate, joy, love, live in the now, Now, NOW! It's all that serves you or god if you want to call it, which is you ya know;) come on guys, your making all too much out of this all.

Abundance
—
Abundance is the ability to do what you want to do, when you want to do it. Money is only one of many valid tools to achieve this abundance. And it is not always the most direct tool to use – for doing what you want to do when you want to do it.
